THF Mentorship Gives Post-Grad Guidance

January is #NationalMentoringMonth!

One benefit all T. Howard Foundation interns have is being paired with a mentor. Most THF mentors currently work in the media industry, and half are THF Alumni. All mentors volunteer their time to assist a new generation of diverse professionals in the industry.

THF Alumnus, Khobi Price ’18, shares THF experience

I first learned about the T. Howard Foundation (THF) Internship Program through my girlfriend. She knew I wanted to work in the media and entertainment industry and knew it would be a great opportunity. So, if it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t have applied to the program.

I applied because I was in awe of the companies THF has partnered with. The mere thought of working with one of them was exciting. I also believed in the mission of THF and wanted to be a part of the prestigious program.

I was accepted into the program and landed an internship with CBS Sports in New York, NY. I worked as a Features Intern where I researched and pitched story ideas for future projects, one of which was shot, edited and produced. I had the opportunity to observe and assist producers with the set-up and breakdown of shoots and interviews. I was fortunate enough to meet a lot of great people during my THF experience, including my mentor, Jeff Johnson.

THF mentor provides post-grad support

I didn’t know what to expect from Jeff, but I know I couldn’t have asked for a better mentor. From meeting up to talk and give advice, to introducing me to people in his network, Jeff helped me a lot from a professional development standpoint. He gave me insights on how I can progress in my career. Jeff is an insightful, funny, and a good man who I’m not only grateful to have as a mentor, but also as a friend.

Jeff and I still keep in touch, even though my internship concluded. I’ll reach out to him to ask the best ways to navigate searching for a post-undergraduate job. He reminded me to use all my resources and connections, and not to leave any stone unturned.

I would recommend applying to THF because without it I wouldn’t have gotten the experience I did at CBS Sports Network, I wouldn’t have met Jeff, and I wouldn’t be as well prepared for post-undergraduate life as I am now. For that, I thank my girlfriend, my parents, Jeff, the Foundation, and the fantastic people I met at CBS Sports Network, all of who helped me get to this point in my life and budding career.

Khobi Price is expected to graduate in May 2019 with a bachelor’s degree in communication studies from Northern Illinois University.
