Alumni Spotlight: Sherry Chen

FORBES – Under 30 Summit is a four-day, immersive summit featuring A- list speakers, speed pitching, community service and more! Hear THF Alumni talk about their experiences at this year’s event.

Can you tell us about your Forbes  Under 30 experience?

The Forbes Under 30 summit was a great learning experience to meet talented founders, entrepreneurs, and scholars from around the United States. It was a place filled with creative ideas and strong-willed people who strive to break out of traditional norms and make the world a better place.

Along with the panel discussions, there were interactive experimental activities to engage the attendees such as Cadillac’s self-driving vehicles, Samsung’s new technology development and many more. I also had the opportunity to meet Serena Williams, a world-class athlete, and attend a music festival featuring Normani, 21 Savage, and The Chainsmokers.

What was your most memorable/rewarding moment at the summit?

My most memorable and rewarding moment at the summit was experiencing was the sponsored tour around downtown Detroit. I realized that Detroit is a booming city with great opportunities to grow and develop. Known for its automobile industry, the city is growing with new buildings and infrastructure. There many well-known companies like Quicken Loans, LinkedIn, Chase, Microsoft, Google, etc that have offices in this city. Their slogan was “move here, move the world.”

Tell us about a few of the events you attended.

Two events that I attended was a startup hub and a session about the transformation of the marketing industry with top CMOs from various companies. The startup hub had about 100 different companies ranging from financial literacy, sustainability initiatives, social goods, new product development, etc. I also had the opportunity to attend the startup pitch where 5 top startups pitched for the $250,000 in media spending from Forbes.

What was your biggest takeaway from the summit?

My biggest takeaway from the summit is learning about all the various creative startups and initiatives that people have developed. It was absolutely inspiring to hear about all these different opportunities in the marketplace. Nothing is impossible if you put your time and effort into it.

What advice would you give to THF  interns/alumni interested in attending the 2020 Forbes Under 30 Summit?

One advice that I would give to THF interns/alumni interested in attending next year’s Under 30 Summit to take advantage of the speaker series by introducing yourself to the founders/CEO. I highly recommend that other students take this opportunity to ask them questions about their career paths and journey. I gained insights and advice from the speakers and even got some business cards!

How has the Forbes Under 30  Summit helped you set goals for your future and how do you plan to achieve them?

The Forbes Under 30 Summit has definitely helped set goals for my future by expanding my network connections and getting insights into the marketing and tech industry. Right now, I am interested in digital marketing and content creation in the media and entertainment industry. I plan to achieve this goal by applying to a diverse field of internship roles and connecting with the professionals that I met.
