Alumni Spotlight: Kiyana Akins

FORBES – Under 30 Summit is a four-day, immersive summit featuring A- list speakers, speed pitching, community service and more! Hear THF Alumni talk about their experiences at this year’s event.

Can you tell us about your Forbes Under 30 experience?

My Forbes Under 30 experience was nothing short of amazing. Being surrounded by so many like-minded individuals, and for so many of them to be minorities, it was breathtaking.

What was your most memorable/rewarding moment at the summit?

My most memorable and rewarding moment was honestly having the ability to reconnect with my THF peers. This was the most memorable because I knew I had done my job of networking this summer.

Tell us about a few of the events you attended.

I attended multiple sessions from For(bes) The Culture, which is a sub-organization under Forbes that promotes minority excellence and opportunities. I also attended Serena Williams and Kevin Durant’s session. All of which were phenomenal, just to learn about all of the investments they make to ensure that they are wealthy rather than just being rich. To receive all of this information as a college student so close to entering the real world is so instrumental. It forced me to want to make goals and plans that I know in the future I will be so glad I did.

What was your biggest takeaway from the summit?

My biggest takeaway is to look for wealth versus temporary riches. It is so easy to get caught up in a nice paycheck, but what are you doing to ensure longevity and security in your finances.

What advice would you give to THF interns/alumni interested in attending the 2020 Forbes Under 30 Summit?

Apply early and go! Go network! Not only with the speakers and CEOs, but with the students as well. It was something so special in the atmosphere; you just know you are in the room with the next generation of CEOs and entrepreneurs. The future looks amazing.

How has the Forbes Under 30 Summit helped you set goals for your future and how do you plan to achieve them?

For a long time, I almost felt like I was surrounded by friends whose goals/dreams and drives were not at all in the same category as mine. It got discouraging because I would question my ability to execute those goals. Being in an environment around so many people like myself really put me in the mindset that not only can I do, I can start making necessary moves now. Why wait?
