5 Tips to Giving a Great Interview

In this time of corporate downsizing and political maneuvering, when the phrase “fragile economy” is the new standard, students and recent grads looking to land a job need to make a great first impression. Here are five tips that can help nudge the door open for you:

1. 1.    DO YOUR HOMEWORK – Review available information about the company (press releases, articles from business journals, etc.).
2. 2.    BE ENTHUSIASTIC – You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression.
3. 3.    ASK SMART QUESTIONS – Focus your questions on what YOU can do for the company, not what they can do for you.
4. 4.   NEVER LEAVE AN INTERVIEW WITHOUT ASKING: “Where do you think I could contribute effectively?” The answer to this question gives you an idea of what the interviewer thought of you...and gives you the opportunity, if needed, to address concerns BEFORE you leave.
5. 5.   ALWAYS FOLLOW UP – A simple “Thank You” note reflects your appreciation of the interviewer’s time and his/her consideration of you as a candidate.
